Friends and I were sitting in the library once discussing(verbally) disability rights when a random man decided to educate us. He was Native American and he used a cane and thus felt entitled to tell us, complete strangers, that there was an easy solution to ableism and racism: you simply ignore them and live your life. I attempted to tell him that in many cases prejudice and stigma causes people to purposefully put blocks in people’s way, some folks are not given a chance to prove themselves. We just get locked out of the conversation. He completely ignored me and just kept saying that folks just need to put in more effort. So I signed to my friend that it was worthless to keep talking since he was obviously willfully ignorant. He wasn’t happy that I cut him out of the conversation :)
